On the Feast Day of Our Lady of Lourdes 2017, the Church will celebrate the 25th World Day of the Sick. This gives all of us the opportunity to pray together, to think especially of those who are sick or have a disability, and for those who care for them.

When instituting the World Day of the Sick in May 1992, Pope John Paul II said the universal Church should prepare to celebrate this day with a renewed spirit of service to one another. He said that the day seeks to involve all people of goodwill: “the basic questions posed by the reality of suffering and the appeal to bring both physical and spiritual relief to the sick do not concern believers alone, but challenge the whole of humanity.” Pope John Paul II went on to say that the first World Day of the Sick would be held on the 11th February 1993 and should be celebrated every year thereafter on that day, the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes.

And this brings us to 2017, the 25th World Day of the Sick. How should we mark this day? In his message about the day, Pope Francis says: “Illness, above all grave illness, always places human existence in crisis and brings with it questions that dig deep. Our first response may at times be one of rebellion: Why has this happened to me? We can feel desperate, thinking that all is lost, that things no longer have meaning…
